Request for singles

Music singles! Now that iTunes offers DRM free tracks, I’m building up my music library 99 cents (or 1.29) at a time. I have plenty of CDs but have purchased very little music in the past several years. This is your chance for you to give me a list of absolutely essential songs I should have in my music library. I’ve been spending 3-5 dollars a week, so you see why I’m focusing on singles, but if you want to recommend an entire album I won’t stop you.

You can recommend things you like or things you think I’d like. You can recommend recent music or not-so-recent music. Yes, I have Girl Talk. I didn’t like it on the first listen but I like very few things on the first listen, so I’ll give it another listen soon.

I’m going to post this on Facebook too so if you see it there you can respond here or there.

You should try Emusic. It’s a lot cheaper and probably has a lot of things iTunes doesn’t have as they focus more on independent music. It’s subscription based, but for $15 a month you can get tracks for 30 cents each. You can build up your collection a lot faster that way. As a bonus, if you quit, they will bug you to rejoin with 75 free tracks. I usually sign up for a month and quit a couple times a year. It works out at about 12 cents a track that way. I think if I actually had permanent employment and internet I would just stick with it though. They have a lot of great music.

So. Do you have any actual recommendations? Five songs. Give me five songs you think I need to have in my music library.

I could probably think of 5000, but here is 5 off the top of my head:

    Monkees – Randy Scouse Git
    Decemberists – The Tain
    Pentangle – Rain and Snow
    Therion – Lemuria
Peter Hammill – This Side of the Looking Glass

My recommendation is to go through the album list I made and preview the albums. I could go through and pick one song from each of those albums, but you would probably choose different songs from those same albums, especially as many of those albums are fairly eclectic. Feel free to randomly demand five more songs though.

I just tried to see if the iTunes store has any of the albums I can’t find anywhere else and promptly realized one of the many reasons I hate iTunes and have avoided it for years: You are required to have the iTunes program on your computer to even see what iTunes offers. No thank you! If Apple wants me to purchase some of their products, they damn well better not be pushing other products down my throat first.

    Stupid Apple!

That was one of the main reasons I bought a sansa mp3 player rather than an ipod. I didn’t want to be forced to use iTunes and nothing else whenever I wanted to change or add music.
