So meta it hurts
I’ve been a little worried that I’m losing most of my non-technical readers with the recent microcontroller postings. As far as my mental picture of my weblog audience goes, I think I have 5, maybe 6 regular readers who understand this electrical engineering / microcontrollers stuff, and maybe only two or three of those care about it. Most of the rest of my audience are friends, who I figure are reading to figure out what I’m up to (and maybe they think I write something interesting now and then.) And finally, there is my mom, who would be perfectly happy to see every post and every picture be about the grandchild, what the grandchild is up to, new words the grandchild is saying (Jeffery, the charming 5 year old downstairs, taught my daughter how to say “poop bucket”, fortunately she forgot how to say it shortly afterwards), and so on. Chances are if you are reading this, you aren’t one of my nerdy engineer friends, so I’m going to explain what my current weblog philosophy is so you understand why I’m doing what I’m doing.
A few months ago, Paul Butzi had either a single post or a series of posts on which weblogs he likes (I tried but could not find the post I was thinking of). He mentioned that he really liked daily weblogs written by artists as they are trying to create art. That inspired me to post all of the SoFoBoMo stuff as I was making my book. As I thought about it, I decided it was a good idea and I should apply it to other things too. In this case, with the microcontrollers, every time I learn something new, I ask myself if that would be something I would like to have seen clearly explained in a weblog post (or in an article or whatever). Most of the time, the answer is yes.
So I’ll be writing it up here. I should point out that I view my playing around with electrical circuits as art, and if you don’t believe that’s possible, then you don’t understand electrons. Engineers overwhelmingly prefer to call circuits “elegant” but I suspect that “artistic” is equally, if not more, applicable.
Sometimes I fear what I write about may be so basic that I’m afraid I’m going to lose my technical readers too! At any rate, suck it up, readers, because I’m going to post about things I’m doing or things that happen that I find interesting. The problem is that I find so many things interesting. If you feel like you’re getting whiplash from the topic switches, it’s okay, I’m probably just as confused as you are.
